The Goddess of Rayearth

These costumes were a long work in progress, they were a collaborative effort between *chibi-lenne, *Sin-of-Otaku and I.

Costume Construction Info:

The dresses were make out of a white cotton base with chiffon overlay, since the artwork colours on the main dresses are quite muted. All of the dresses were entirely draped, with the exception of Hikaru's skirt which is two tears of the cotton and chiffon overlays. The costumes are finished with roll hems along every layer, as well as some sections being blind hemmed on top of that.

The sashes are made from the reverse side of bridal satin, since we didn't want the satin shine. The tassels are handmade from embroidery floss.

The armor, chest plates and basically anything large and gold are made by me. They are constructed out of craftfoam, poster board, hot glue and wire. Once they were painted gold we 'antiqued' the pieces to give them more dimension and topped everything off with a coat of spray glaze.

The large gems on all three costumes are resin casted by me, I made wooded blanks for all the gems by reducing wood using a dremel, coating them in gesso and then sanding them as smooth as possible. I then made a silicon rubber mold and proceeded to cast the gems into plastic and coat them with glaze to get them as shiny as I could.

The wigs are also cut and styled by me, Hikarus took the most work just because I had to sew in wefts to make her crazy rat tail/mullet. I cut and thickened Umi's bangs by stealing some of the hair from around the bangs and incorporating it in. Fuu's wig just needed a bang trim and some loving attention to the curls.

Jayuna made our floral headdresses, by braiding into circular wreaths. I hand painted my flowers a deeper blue since the original colour looked VERY purple against my wig and fabric, Jayuna also hand painted the black poppy centers for her flowers. I then made and added the drooping 'jewels' for Umi and Fuu's headdresses (made from green floral wire and beads) and made Hikaur's gold circle beaded things.

Umi's Jewelery is all handmade by me out of bought beads, craft foam and varying gauges of gold wire. Three of the the four rings are made of craft foam and beads the the fourth ring is made from wire circling a bead to hold in in place as well as onto my finger. I also made two bracelets and the one large 'gauntlet' bracelet. As well as the dangly bits from my chest plate and earrings for Hikaru and I.

To top everything off we gutted Jayuna's Rayearth Mokona plushy and made him into our purse.
